Reid McCord's current work draws from his experiences of living and traveling abroad. Images that McCord photographed are set upon layers of independently produced backgrounds of color and texture then united by lines of drawing. McCord reacts spontaneously and allows his subconscious mind to take over as he draws freely amongst the layers of color and texture. The result is a shifting perception between the illusion of a central recognizable image and the partially recognizable forms born from this process.
While McCord explores different subject matter and applications of paint, illusion and perception have remained the central themes of his work. His aim has been to provide the viewer with an experience that changes so the viewer is left to question their perceptions and understanding of the work.
Born in 1975, in
Calgary,
Alberta, Reid McCord received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the
University of
Calgary in 1997. His work can be found throughout
Calgary in the private and public sector.
